You say you want a revolution. Well. you know we all want to change the world.

If you want a revolution in video display, what are your options? From what we’ve seen, the most promising and revolutionary new TV technologies are OLED and QLED displays.

OLED means Organic Light-Emitting Diode. QLED means Quantum dot Light-Emitting Diode. Though the names are similar, there are significant differences.

WHAT IS OLED?

OLED displays are emissive, composed of organic materials that emit light when they receive electric current. Each diode switches on or off independently. For this reason, it takes millions to fill your TV screen. When they are switched off, they are completely off, and they appear black. Because of this, OLED offers the greatest contrast in TV displays, and the lowest power consumption. The independence of each pixel also fosters a higher screen refresh rate, which reduces blur.

Because they don’t require backlights, OLED displays can be extremely thin. Panasonic has even produced a flexible version that can be rolled up for carrying.

WHAT IS QLED?

QLED is non-emissive. Quantum dots don’t emit  light and color. They are spread over a thin film that filters light from an LED panel, and as the LED light passes through the QLED film, it is refined to ideal color temperature. A QLED diode emits color in a narrow wavelength band when exposed to the correct light.

QLED displays offer brightness levels surpassing any other display type. In a room with a high level of ambient light, the QLED picture will stand out.

Because of the structure of QLED displays, screens can be manufactured in almost any size. Some can be bigger than 100 inches across.

WHICH IS BEST?

QLED, because of its superior brightness levels, is best for brightly lit rooms. Because of the deeper blacks providing higher contrast, and its peerless refresh rate, the OLED picture will be slightly better in most viewing conditions.

Most critics judge the OLED picture slightly better than the QLED picture, but the difference is almost invisibly small. Both are better than everything else.
