Hurricane Victims Get Aid from AT&T
Hurricane Victims Get Aid from AT&T
You probably wouldn’t choose to have your dwelling hammered by a hurricane. You’d avoid it if you could.
The situation isn’t entirely without its compensations, though. You might at least get free broadband service out of it.
AT&T announced on September 28 that it will provide free service in areas affected by Hurricane Ian. Through October 28, AT&T will waive talk, text, and data overage charges for its customers in certain communities. The waivers apply to postpaid and prepaid customers in 828 zip codes in Florida.
Customers in a few counties in Georgia and South Carolina will receive the waivers, too.
AT&T will also waive certain connection and wiring fees for business customers.
For a while, AT&T even allowed customers of other carriers to roam on its network. It did not guarantee how long it would do so, however.
Restoring Service for Hurricane Victims
In addition, the telecom has sent disaster recovery teams into some of the most heavily affected areas.
Because the hurricane had destroyed Sanibel Island’s causeway, it is accessible only by boat. To restore internet service there, then, AT&T mounted a small cell on an amphibious vehicle.
For other areas, AT&T has connected generators and small cells. It has been especially energetic in connecting shelters for refugees.
Furthermore, the telecom’s FirstNet Fleet helps maintain reliable connections for emergency personnel. Beside the affected counties in Florida, two counties in South Carolina are getting FirstNet assistance for first responders. Sheriffs, firefighters, and search and rescue teams are getting dedicated connectivity where they need it the most.
AT&T is not alone among wireless carriers in offering waivers for hurricane victims. But AT&T has extended the waivers for several weeks longer than its competitors have.
