Watch TV ($15.00 per month) launched by AT&T
Watch TV- at $15.00/ Month- Launched by AT&T
AT&T’s buyout of Time Warner Inc was expected to produce massive disruption of the pay TV market. We haven’t had to wait long. Merely a week after the merger was completed, the telecom has already signaled its commitment to upending the established order. With the launch of Watch TV, a small channel bundle selling for a mere $15.00 per month, AT&T has opened a small window into the industry’s long term future: nearly total customization. The new service is as close as any major TV system has come to offering a la carte video channels.
Watch TV is an over-the-top (OTT) service. This means it is delivered strictly by the internet, without a satellite, cable, or telecom system involved. The channels it offers include AMC, Animal Planet, Audience, BBC, Boomerang, Discovery, Food Network, FYI, Hallmark, History, Independent Film Channel, Lifetime, OWN, TBS, TCM, TLC, TNT, Tru TV, and Viceland. AT&T said it will soon add Viacom networks to the package. These will include BET, Comedy Central, MTV 2, Nick Toons, Nick Teen, and VH1.
Watch TV also includes on-demand access to a library of more than 15,000 movie and TV show.
Beside all the features listed above, AT&T offers the option of adding one premium service at no extra charge. Qualifying premium services include Amazon Music, HBO, and Pandora Premium.
At $15.00 per month, Watch TV edges out Dish Network’s Sling TV for the title of cheapest multichannel video package. We’re still along way from true a la carte TV, but the industry is obviously moving in that direction.
Watch TV is not AT&T’s only new promotion. For a subscriber to any of its unlimited data plans, the telecom giant is also offering a $15.00 monthly credit toward any of its other TV services. These include DirecTV (satellite), AT&T U-Verse (telecom) and the internet streaming DirecTV Now.
