BLUE FROM SLING TV

Sling TV, Dish Network’s internet video streaming platform. continues to innovate. Last Thursday, the company said that it has finished beta testing of Sling Blue, its multiple stream service. It will now offer the multi-stream service for monthly rates starting at $25.00. This is for a 40-channel package. Several additional packages, including News Extra, Sports Extra, and Kids Extra, are available for $5.00 per month each.

Sling Blue will enable access to the programming from three devices simultaneously. The original single-stream service will be called Sling Orange.

Dish also announced recently that it will add channels from NBC Universal to its lineup. NBCU cable networks, including Bravo, NBC Sports, SyFy, and USA, will be in the base package. Customers in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Dallas, San Diego, San Francisco, Washington (DC) and Hartford will also receive their local NBC stations through Sling TV. Other NBCU channels, including CNBC, E!, Golf, MSNBC, and NBC Universo will be available with optional $5.00 per month add-on packages.

In negotiating licencing agreements with broadcasters and other content providers, Dish Network has placed strong emphasis on its internet-based video platform.  From the inception of Sling TV, Dish has been committed to competing aggressively against other video streaming services such as Sony’s PlayStation Vue, and it is fending off competition from emerging IP TV services offered by DirecTV and Hulu.

According to Bloomberg News, PlayStation Vue has about 100,000 subscribers. Sling TV has almost 700,000.

Unlike conventional cable and satellite TV services, Sling TV does not require long term contracts or installation of proprietary equipment. Access requires only a four-digit customer code. Sling TV is compatible with iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire Tablets; Mac and PC computers; XBox One gaming consoles; and Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Channel Master, Chromecast, Roku, and ZTE streaming devices.
