ESPN Airs College Football in Native 4K

ESPN & DirecTV Offer Native 4K College Football

Beginning Saturday, October 12, ESPN and Samsung will join forces to televise a series of college football games in native 4K format.

DirecTV will be the chief carrier of the native 4K game series.

The first broadcast, out of a six-game series called the Samsung QLED Game of the Week, will be a match between LSU and Florida at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. Samsung and ESPN will follow the series with a native 4K broadcast of the College Football National Championship Game on January 13.

After the first such broadcast, ESPN will decide the Samsung QLED 4K Game of the Week on a weekly basis.

Jodi Markley, ESPN’s Executive Vice President of Content Operations and Creative Services, said she is pleased with the joint effort. Markley said, “After months of planning and technical testing, we are excited sports fans can watch 4K UHD college Football games as part of the Samsung QLED Game of the Week. As 4K technical resources and workflows become more readily available, we will continue to grow (sic) this standard across our operations. 4K images are stunning, and we look forward to sharing them with our fans.”

DirecTV also weighed in on the matter. Tim Gibson, the Vice President of Video and Application Marketing for AT&T, DirecTV’s parent company, said, “It’s been a big year for us as we continue to innovate and deliver the best is sports in vibrant 4K HDR, and we’re excited to give college football fans even more content options with ESPN.”
