Steep Discounts from Sling TV
Steep Discounts from Sling TV
Sling TV, Dish Network’s semi-independent streaming video platform, wants new enrollments. To that end, it’s offering steep discounts for its core channel packages- some of the steepest we’ve ever seen.
For new customers, Sling TV will discount its core Sling Blue and Sling Orange packages from $35.00 to $10.00 for the first month, and bundling Orange and Blue together will cost the new customer only $25.00 for the first month. In addition, the streaming platform will offer temporary free access to its premium cloud DVR service, DVR Plus, which provides 200 hours of access for $5.00 per month. For the first month, though, Sling TV will not charge for it.
By contrast, Sling TV’s standard free DVR service enables only 50 hours of recording.
Sling TV has not announced a termination date for this promotion.
Why does Sling TV offer such steep discounts?
Sling TV currently has about 2.47 million customers, having added 16,000 in the fourth quarter of 2020. The firm evidently believes, though, that much greater opportunity for growth is available. Conventional pay TV platforms lost 1.35 million customers in the last quarter of 2020, and streaming platforms stand to gain from the trend. Charlie Ergen, the chairman of Dish Network, recently said, “We should have more market share there.”
Ergen explained that Sling TV recently added 15,000 titles to its video-on-demand library, and he expects the free cloud DVR service to drive greater demand. He believes, therefore, that Sling TV should see accelerating growth. By July, he should know how well the current promotion is working.
Other pay TV providers also discount their streaming services. We haven’t seen any as steep (by percentage) as Sling TV’s, though.
