Interactive Livestream Launched by Comcast

Following Disney and Sling TV, Comcast is exploring new frontiers in two-way video communication. This includes interactive TV.

last month, America’s largest cable system operator launched Watchwith, an interactive livestreaming app, in concert with a special episode of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.

The app works on Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex platforms. Viewers can communicate through it in real time with the six main characters in the show. Watchwith also features a Sneak Peak Meter, a polling function by which the audience can open video clips collectively.

Other Interactive Video Systems

Comcast is not the first pay TV provider to offer a co-watching feature. In September, Disney+ debuted what it called GroupWatch. It enables viewers in up to seven different locations can watch synced playbacks together. Disney said GroupWatch will work through Smart TV sets, other dedicated streaming devices, mobile tablets and phones, and computers. Movies and TV series in the Disney library will display the Groupwatch logo on a corner of the screen.

Sling TV followed closely on Disney’s heels, offering Watch Party on September 23. Watch Party works with live and on-demand content offered through Sling Orange, Sling Blue, any Sling TV Extra package, Sling Latino, and Sling International Video. The app is available through Chrome web browsers on desktop and laptop computers.

Sling TV is a subsidiary of Dish Network. It offers multichannel TV packages for as little as $40.00 per month- about half what you’d expect to pay for a standard cable TV service.

Other streaming services have tested co-watching without committing to it: Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Movies Anywhere. And we can expect other providers to offer their own interactive video apps in the next few months.
