REGIONAL SPORTS ADDED TO SLING TV
COMCAST REGIONAL SPORTS ON SLING TV
To fend off a competitive threat from YouTube’s move into live TV, Sling TV saw the need to add value to its own video service. Last Thursday, Dish Network’s semi-independent streaming video platform announced the addition of NBC’s regional sports networks to its already extensive sports lineup.
Under the agreement between Sling TV and Comcast, which owns NBC, the streaming platform will carry CSN California, CSN Bay Area, CSN Chicago, and CSN Mid-Atlantic. The new channels will be in Sling TV’s lineup before April 2, when the Major League Baseball season begins. They will be in the $25.00 per month Blue (multi-stream) tier in select markets. Sling TV already carries FOX Sports 1 & 2, NFL Red Zone, NBA TV, several ESPN channels, and a number of FOX Regional Sports Networks.
The new regional sports networks will be in Sling TV’s core package, and the price for it will not increase.
The addition of the NBC sports channels helps Sling TV to match Google’s YouTube TV offer. Google, which announced last Friday that it would launch its live TV service “soon”, said that it will carry the NBC regional sports networks from the beginning. YouTube TV will price its service at $35.00 per month for the basic package, with the option to add more channels for additional fees.
From its launch in early 2015, Sling TV has expanded its subscriber base rapidly, and now has nearly 1.2 million. It has maintained steady growth in spite of competition from new entrants in the non-subscription streaming video market, including DirecTV Now, Hulu’s upcoming live TV platform, and direct-to-consumer streams from Time Warner Cable, Comcast, and HBO.
New subscribers can get Sling TV for as little as $20.00 per month. It can be streamed to Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV streaming devices, iOS and Android tablets and phones, Mac and PC computers, and PlayStation Vue and XBox One gaming consoles.
